By steaming at 20 to 25 knots, the carrier reduces the relative speed of the landing aircraft by 20 to 25 knots by steaming into the wind, the carrier further reduces the relative speed of the landing aircraft by another 5 to 10 knots. A modern carrier jet has a stall speed of about 120 to 130 knots, and the faster a plane is moving the greater the likelihood of some kind of landing-related accident occurring. Carrier operations then and now rely on the relative airspeed of the moving carrier moving into the wind, because carrier planes land and stop in about 1/10th of the runway distance in which a land-based fighter jet lands and comes to a stop. ![]() Most fixed-wing aircraft are too heavy and too fast to land on carriers when the carrier is standing still. It may or may not be a "bug." If it is a bug, then the developers accidentally introduced an element of realism. If the carrier is still in port, the aircraft cannot land.
